I first fell in love with this game the same way I fell in love with most games; by watching Pewdiepie play it.
I haven't played as much of the game as I usually do, but I've watched every let's play video Pewds ever made about it, so I like to think I know the game pretty well.
As you would expect from an Atari PlayStation 1 game that came out in 1999, the graphics are terrible. But that's not the point. Plot wise, the game is phenomenal. It's confusing, and terrifying in a psychological way, (and I've always said, there's nothing scarier than a little girl in a horror game)
The plot follows Harry Mason, a thirty something writer who planned a quiet vacation with his daughter Cheryl in the sleepy town of Silent Hill. However, his car crashes, rendering him unconscious and when he does wake up, Cheryl is gone. The objective is simple. Find her.
However, the town is covered by mist, and overrun with monsters. Expect a wild goose chase in this game. Apparently, Harry never taught Cheryl the importance of not running away from her parents.
The dialogue is worse than Resident Evil, with unbearably long pauses between speaking, but the voices themselves are more convincing than Chris and Wesker from the original RE.
I use the map much more than I do in Resident Evil titles, because you can hardly see two feet in front of you and it's easier to get lost in SH than it is in any other game I've ever played.
There's bound to be some confusion when you die as to whether that was supposed to happen, or whether you were just low on health, if you aren't presented with a cut scene a few moments after death, expect the latter.
The plot can be confusing and hard to follow at times, but it doesn't matter. Just do what the map says, and you'll be fine.
Overall:
The graphics are terrible, the plot is confusing and the dialogue is unbearable. However, for reasons I Can't explain, it's still one of the best god damn horror games I've ever played.
8/10
