Resident Evil Revelations Review

RE Revelations was my first ever Resident Evil game. On top of this, it was the first game I ever completed. I'm still convinced that it was one of the greatest games ever created, however, a lot of people don't agree. Using the best of my abilities (and a little help from the internet) I will try to give you a well-rounded review, that focuses on the good points as well as the bad.

Revelations was designed specifically for the 3DS console. That's the platform I have, and the platform I'm reviewing.

The first thing I noticed were the game's graphics. Up until that fateful birthday when I was given a 3DS and a Revelations game chip I'd been playing Mario 64 on my DSI. Of course, I knew the graphics were going to be an improvement, I just didn't know how much of an improvement! Even with the 3D turned off the graphics are phenomenal.

At first, your only option is to play the story mode. Raid mode comes later. There were a few moments where I jumped out of my seat, but seasoned fans would argue not as many as some other RE titles.

The basic controls are easy. The circle pad to move, R button to aim, Y to shoot, A to heal, X for knife attacks and other side weapons (Grenades, decoys and so on.) I'd highly recommend sticking with these controls and not changing them.

Apart from Jill and Chris, the game consists of all new characters. Some of these characters are easily likeable (Parker) and some were intended to be unlikeable (Raymond, who I love anyway) and for some of these characters there's no middle ground. You either like them or you don't (Quint and Keith)

More on that later.

The plot was confusing in places, starting with the segment spent on the beach. It took me quite a while to work out that it was set the day before Parker and Jill rocked up on the Zenobia.

It was all over the place, leaving you wondering exactly who could you trust? (Parker. Always trust Parker... and Quint.) One minute your on a rescue mission looking for Jessica, the next minute your in Terragrigia fighting alongside Jessica, and then... well, I don't want to spoil it for you.

I'll admit there were plot holes, but if you look at any movie, book, game, cartoon ETC, you're bound to find one, if not more, plot hole. Some big ones in Revelations were;

How did Parker survive his fall? I'm glad he did of course but, that was like... thirty feet. Into fire. And explosions.
 How did Parker, Raymond and Jessica get off the Zenobia? Again, I'm glad they did, (Except for Jessica. I wish she'd stayed on the boat and burned.) but... how. The boat sank. There was one helicopter operated by Hat Trick. As far as I know, there weren't any others. Correct me If I'm wrong of course.
Quint and Keith survived that explosion? How? Pot luck?
And finally, the big one;
Jessica and Raymond working together? How. The. Hell? I don't even know.

Back onto characters, I was surprised to hear that Quint and Keith (mostly Quint) were criticized so much I game reviews. Personally, when Quint tripped over something (Was it a bucket?) in Valkoinen Mokki, it made me think of him not just as a game character, or even just as a real person, I saw him as someone I could relate to. Someone out of their depth in a world full of monsters, tripping over something their slightly more co-ordinated partner managed to step over.

To this day, Quint remains one of my favourite characters. Apparently, Capcom added them in as comic relief. I think it worked perfectly. For example, when Quint contacted Chris to guide him through the ship but ended up talking to Jessica, and changed his voice to sound more macho, I was laughing so hard that I had to pause the game so I didn't get killed while I calmed down. Seriously? Did no one else think that was adorable and hilarious?

When you do unlock Raid Mode, it's great fun. As there are three difficulties, that means there's three versions of each level, each of them unpredictable. At first, on Chasm difficulty, it all seems pretty traditional. Oozes in the Zenobia, Blob things on the beach, Hunters in Terragrigia.

things start to change on Trench difficulty however. There are monsters out of place, adding to the suspense and terror.

Skagdead. Expect to die a lot when you meet this dude.
Then there's Abyss. Don't even speak to me about the final levels of Abyss. I only got through all of the levels starting from Emergency Passageway to Mad Banquet because I had a very, very good partner. You may as well forget everything you thought you knew about Revelations when you get to this stage. Hunters in the flood, piranha guppy mutant things on the beach, it gets pretty hectic.

Overall:

The game controls are great, the graphics are wonderful, the characters are awesome (I guess that's a matter of opinion) but the plot gets confusing.

9/10
