After a long battle with Norman of Casual difficulty, managed to defeat Norman for the first time. I won with the help of my Dad. He completed Campaign on Casual difficulty over several weeks while I was still stuck on the boss fight with Norman. That may make defeating Norman seem like a very difficult task, but you must remember that I am a very, very sucky gamer. It can be done. This might help you.
Basic Tips and Tricks
When I played through story mode the first time round' I relied on a walkthrough supplied by IGN.com. This walkthrough is great, but not useful when you get to the boss fight with our pal Norman. It will instruct you to always aim for the heart or the head. Yeah. Don't do that. It may look like it's working, but it's not. Trust me.
Obviously, what you want to do is shoot him. But, what IGN won't tell you is where to shoot him. If you shoot him near the heart or head, he'll go reeling backwards. However, if you shoot him at the waistline or lower, he'll stumble forwards making the real weak point in his back briefly accessible. Don't worry if you miss. You'll get him eventually.
The real Norman is the one that breaths purple smoke.
Don't bother with melee moves. When he's stunned, take advantage of the fact that his weak point if fully available. Now would be a good time to use your machine gun.
I'm unsure how many herbs are in the room. On normal difficulty, I know there's two. Leave them where they are unless you're facing a dire emergency. Hopefully, you entered the room with five herbs. You'll need them. When you run out, scan Norman for one. You can scan him about three times, but pick your moments. When he's right next to you and looks like he's about to grab you, it may not be the best time to scan him.
There are only two boxes of ammo in the room, and there's no way of telling what they'll give you until you try to pick them up, but, if you only have the shotgun and the Machine gun in your inventory, that's the ammo you'll get. Make sure to drop any other weapons in the weapon box if that's what your after. You can pick them up again after you get the ammo.
Recommended Weapons
This depends on the weapons and amount of ammo you have. I found the shotgun most effective. It sends him reeling either forwards or backwards (Depending on where you hit) with one blow. I would recommend using the machine gun when he's stunned. If you're on casual difficulty, or are on normal and have the custom part daze 3 or above, you can alternate between the machine gun and the shotgun. The Magnum L. Hawk, if you have it, will usually send him reeling in two shots. Often, you don't have time. The handgun you're given at the beginning of the game is damn near useless unless you're knocked over, and then I'd just recommend getting up ASAP instead of shooting. If you get knocked over a lot, and you happened to take the Handgun Government Parker dropped when he fell and you still have it with you, it might work. I never tried it, because I think I lost it along the way :,(
Stage 1
The battle with Norman has different stages, depending on how much you've ticked him off. In the first stage, he'll teleport in front or behind you, mostly in front. Keep your distance from him. Shoot him low before attempting to hit the spot on his back.
If you get close enough, he may grab you by the head and lift you off the ground. If you let him, he'll skewer you with his free arm. Press Y repeatedly until he lets you go.
Stage 2
Instead of one Norman, now there are two. Kind of like in Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs 2. I wonder if they got the idea for that from Norman... that would be cool... As mentioned above, the guy who isn't emitting purple smoke is a hologram. Keep shooting him like you were in stage one. Forget about the hologram. He can't hurt you.
Stage 3
Stage two and stage three are sort of combined, but I'll separate them here. The next thing he'll do is, the hologram will teleport in front of you and Jackie boy'll teleport behind you. If Parker were here, he'd shout something cool like "Sneaky son of a bitch! Take this!" Unfortunately, Parker isn't here. Chris doesn't shout much cool stuff these days. Anyway, just preform a quick turn (Down on the control pad + B) and shoot him with the shotgun.
Stage 4
Next, Hologram will teleport in front of you, and bring his arm down on top of you. He can't hurt you, in fact, his arm goes right through you. Use this time to reload. As usual, I'd recommend using the shotgun. When Norman appears, you don't have much reaction time, so make sure you're ready.
Stage 5
Well, you've made it this far. Good job. Hopefully, you're health is still good and you still have all your herbs. If not, don't panic. This is where it starts to heat up. Norman'll mix things up and combine all the stages. I don't know what he'll do first, so be ready for anything.
Stage 6
Now you're really starting to tick him off. Two things will happen now. Either there will be several holograms that teleport in front of you one after the other, and then the real Norman will appear, giving you about half a second to relax before he skewers you with his arm, it will cause light damage but nothing too serious. If that doesn't happen, one hologram'll teleport in front of you, and
Norman'll teleport behind you and hit you. If this happens, run forwards and perform a quick turn. He'll be doubled over and panting. Now'll be a good time to hit him in his weak spot. Use the machine gun to do so, you get better results.
If that weak spot in his back is turning a brighter pink, you're doing really well. You'll know your getting close when Chris says "What is he, immortal?"
If you get to this stage, and still have a herb in your inventory, you're amazing. If not, try not to die.
Just keep doing what you're doing, and eventually the thing on his back'll burst and he'll die. Watch the ending cutscenes and bask in the glory of your accomplishment. You did fantastic!
Thanks so much for reading my guide to defeating Norman, and remember, don't expect to kill him the first time around. It'll take practise, patience and perseverance.
